There aren’t many artists whose careers span decades, but Beyonce has become one of the most successful solo artists in the world.

The road to success
Beyonce Knowles was born and raised in Houston. She was engulfed in the arts at a very young age, through singing and dance classes and choir. When she was only 8 years old, she and childhood friend Kelly Rowland met LaTavia Roberson during an audition for an all-girl entertainment group. With the addition of two other girls, they formed Girl’s Tyme. The ladies performed all over Houston with the hopes of being discovered. The group was placed on the show “Star Search” but did not win. Over the next few years, the girl group experienced ups and downs with managers and recording companies, until 1996 when they landed a contract with Columbia Records and renamed the group Destiny’s Child.

The power of three
Despite success, members LeToya Luckett and LaTavia Roberson left the band after management disagreements and were replaced by Farrah Franklin and Michelle Williams. Eventually Franklin was dismissed, which left Knowles, Rowland and Williams.

Destiny’s Child quickly climbed the music industry ladder with top charting singles, multi-platinum selling albums and a handful of Grammys. The three even recorded a song for the hit movie “Charlie’s Angels” titled “Independent Women Part I.” By 2001, the group achieved mainstream success with its third album, Survivor. This album included the songs “Bootylicious” and “Survivor.” The title track landed Destiny’s Child a Grammy award for best R&B performance by a duo or group with vocals. Unfortunately for their many fans, in 2001, the girls announced they would be pursuing solo projects.

A woman of all trades
After the group’s breakup, Beyonce didn’t waste any time in the entertainment industry. She acted in several films, including the movie “Austin Powers in Goldmember” and a musical comedy “The Fighting Temptations.” In 2003, her first solo album, Dangerously in Love was released. The album’s lead track “Crazy in Love” featured rapper Jay Z and quickly became Beyonce’s first No. 1 single as a solo artist, in addition to three other songs that made it to the top five on U.S. charts.

In 2004, Destiny’s Child fans around the world rejoiced when the group reunited and released the album Destiny Fulfilled. Many songs off the album achieved amazing success by making it to mainstream radio, like “Lose My Breath,” “Soldier” and “Cater 2 U.” The group embarked on a worldwide tour to accompany the album, which ended in 2005.

Back to solo
After the group’s revival, Beyonce returned to her solo career and released the album B’Day, which was a commercial success - especially the song “Irreplaceable,” which reached No. 1 in several countries. By 2008, Beyonce was a household name, and her popularity increased even more when she and Jay Z married that same year. She revealed that the two tied the knot in a video during the listening party for her third studio album, I Am Sasha Fierce. Beyonce has attributed the title “Sasha Fierce” to her alter ego. The album featured a number of singles, including “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It),&rdquo: “ If I Were A Boy” and “Halo.” The song “Single Ladies” garnered attention with an iconic music video that eventually led Kanye West to interrupt Taylor Swift’s award speech at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. In 2010, Beyonce took a hiatus from music to spend time traveling.

Omnipresence
Beyonce got back in the music scene with albums 4 and Beyonce, released in 2011 and 2013, respectively. She recorded her album Beyonce in secrecy, and during this time, she gave birth to her daughter, Blue Ivy Carter. The album was released without any promotional work done before and shocked her fans. It was reissued in 2014 with extra tracks. It contains more liberating and feminist motifs, including an excerpt from the Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s TED talk “We Should All Be Feminists.” Beyonce’s husband Jay Z is also featured on the album.

Beyonce performed the half-time show at the XLVII Super Bowl. She sang numerous of her hit songs like “Run the World (Girls)” and “Love on Top.” Her performance recieved crticial success for the choreography and vocals alike. In addition, she surprised the millions of viewers by reuniting Destiny’s Child on the stage. The three girls played several of their hits including &lduqo;End of Time” and “Baby Boy.” Williams and Rowland even peformed “Single Ladies (Put A Ring on It)&rdquo although Beyonce released the tune as a solo artist. Beyonce’s performance was increbily energetic and her talent truly shined.

Throughout 2014 and 2015, Beyonce promoted her album by performing at award shows and various world tours, including one where she co-headlined with her husband. Her success as a female solo artist has shocked audiences for years and she has proved herself as one of the most talented performers in the music industry.
