🛠️ About the Workshop
Join Božena Hrycyna for a hands-on intro to scything workshop at the beautiful Gaia Organics farm! This 4-hour morning session is perfect for beginners and those curious about traditional, low-impact mowing techniques.
Learn the fundamentals of:
Setting up and handling a scythe
Proper mowing technique
Sharpening and maintaining your blade
Scything in tall grasses, clover, and mixed weedy areas
This workshop takes place during the coolest part of the day, on dewy morning grass, which is ideal for scything practice.

Gloves
Sun hat
Closed-toe shoes
Long-sleeved shirt (preferably linen or cotton)
Water bottle
Notebook (optional)
Scythes will be provided for practice. Participants can also inquire about purchasing a scythe on site.

Minimum 4 participants required to run the workshop.
Božena will bring additional scythes for practice and lending.
If you'd like to borrow rather than purchase a scythe, please confirm by July 21st.

(Just south of Mooney’s Bay, 10 minutes from downtown Ottawa)
By Car:
Parking is available on-site with space for up to 15 vehicles. Look for the Gaia Organics sign at the entrance off River Road. Please drive slowly—this is an active farm with animals and foot traffic.
By Public Transit:
The closest OC Transpo stop is at River Road / Hunt Club, a 30-minute walk from the venue. Bus route 93 or 99 can bring you close. Please check the OC Transpo website for updated weekend schedules.
Accessibility:
The workshop will take place outdoors on grassy, uneven terrain. While most areas are walkable, they may not be suitable for wheelchairs or walkers. Please contact us in advance if you require assistance—we’ll do our best to accommodate.
Additional Notes:
We recommend wearing weather-appropriate clothing and arriving 10–15 minutes early. Outhouse facilities are available on-site.
