Limbo won awards at various international festivals, including the San Sebastián International Film Festival, the Cairo International Film Festival and the British Independent Film Awards. Watch the official trailer at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-pdLSXjEAoc
This month's film was suggested by Betty Colburn, a student in the SMLC and a member of the Glasgow branch of STAR (Student Action for Refugees). Below is some more information on the film and the charity from Betty.
"Limbo (released 2020) is a comedy/drama film that gives an offbeat but insightful observation of the refugee experience. Set on a fictional remote Scottish island, a group of new arrivals await the results of their asylum claims while each holding on to dreams for their future lives, but in the meantime not being allowed to find work. The main character is Omar, a young Syrian musician burdened by the weight of his grandfather’s oud, an instrument which he has carried all the way from his homeland.
Reflecting the complexity of the movement of people across borders has been a long-held passion for director and writer Ben Sharrock, who spent time working for an NGO in refugee camps in southern Algeria and living in Damascus in 2009 shortly before the outbreak of the Syrian civil war. There, he formed a network of friends whose personal stories inspired the film, which critiques the UK asylum system and the societal attitudes that stem from them. STAR (Student Action for Refugees) is a UK-wide network of student groups working to provide outreach and support to refugees and asylum seekers in the community. In our Glasgow uni branch, we organise a weekly Conversation Club at Maryhill Integration Network (MIN), from 5:30-7pm every Monday. This is an open, welcoming and supportive environment where people come along to practice their English in a relaxed conversational way in order to build their confidence in speaking and meet new friends too. We offer people hot drinks and biscuits, and reimburse the cost of the bus fare for anyone who travels there by bus, so that attending is as accessible and barrier-free as possible, due to people coming from all across the city. Our society also organises regular fundraising events to make enough money for covering the bus fare costs. Some examples of events this year have been a pub quiz, ceilidh, bake sale, concert, and more. Both our fundraising events and our Conversation Club are open to everyone so please come along if you like! All information can be found on our Instagram page: @star.glasgow"The screening will take place in our usual venue, 42 Bute Gardens Lecture Theatre 718.
