The next SMLC Film Club screening will take place on Wednesday 25th February. February's film is También la lluvia [Even The Rain] (2010),directed by Icíar Bollaín and starring Luis Tosar and Gael García Bernal.

También la lluvia won several international film awards, including at the Berlin Film Festival, and 3 Goya awards. It was also selected as Spain's entry to the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 83rd Academy Awards (Oscars) in 2010.

It was selected as this month's film by Maya Feile Tomes. Below is some more information from Maya:

'También la lluvia ("Even the rain...") is a film set between Spain and Latin America, and between present and past. Starring Mexican superstar Gael García Bernal, it follows the tale of a film crew who go to Bolivia in the early 2000s to make a historical movie about Christopher Columbus's first voyage to the Americas in 1492. While there, they get caught up in a series of anti-government protests in the city of Cochabamba, and filming starts to run into difficulty. As they struggle to react, past and present begin to blend as we see old problems rearing their heads once more — or perhaps they were never gone in the first place. What will happen to the protestors? What will happen to the film crew? And can the movie resist a big old blockbuster ending? Come along and find out!

También la lluvia was made in 2010 by Spanish director Icíar Bollaín, one of Spain's premier female filmmakers, and her Scottish screenwriter husband, Paul Laverty.'

The screening will take place in our usual venue, 42 Bute Gardens Lecture Theatre 718.
