'Challenging the public health narrative through the concept of gender: the example of suicide prevention among adolescents and young adults in France'.

Although the concept of gender has been incorporated into social science research, it has not been widely adopted in prevention strategies. This presentation is based on the findings of a PhD study focusing on suicidal behaviour in adolescents and young adults. Drawing on literature concerning the gendered aspects of suicide and suicidology, a sociohistorical analysis was conducted to identify markers of gender in policies surrounding suicidal behaviour among adolescents and young adults in France. This study aims to examine how the concept is integrated into interventions, building on the public health framework and critical suicide studies. Gender can be used as a starting point for a more thorough examination of how prevention is conceived and how social science knowledge is integrated.

Léa Loubet is a PhD student in sociology and public health at Université Paris Cité. She is conducting a research on the integration of the concept of gender in the prevention of suicidal behaviour in adolescents and young adult. Her work is codirected by Joëlle Kivits (ECEVE) and Virginie Bonnot (LPS) and she is supported by the Gender and health prevention Chair (ECEVE/Cité du Genre). Her previous research experiences encompasse tobacco interventions targeting vulnerable populations.
