Caar (Children, Adolescents, and Animals Research) is a specialist research group within the Centre for Applied Developmental Psychology in the School of Health in Social Science, University of Edinburgh. We work closely with the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA).

We are holding two reflective workshops in 2019. These are specifically aimed at practitioners/ professionals involved with child and/or animal welfare (animal welfare education, science education, teaching, social work, social care, police, juvenile justice, health). These will be held at the University of Edinburgh from 2 – 4.30pm.

Our first workshop this year will draw on the full range of Caar projects, examining three key aspects of children's relationships with pets: (1) Children's attachment to different kinds of animal, (2) Grief and loss of a pet, and (3) Sourcing pets & the consequences of the illegal puppy trade. We will highlight findings from both qualitative and quantitative research with children, as well as people who have purchased dogs to be family pets. Our second workshop in May will focus on new advances in animal cruelty prevention.

The workshop format will comprise an introduction to our work, brief summaries of key findings, and focused opportunities to discuss and reflect on personal experience and the practical relevance of the research. It will conclude with a summary of key learning points/implications.
