The Byres Community Hub, Glasgow, United Kingdom
You are warmly invited to join us on Friday 20th June from 13.00 - 14.30 at the Byres Community Hub for the launch of our new resource to support family carers who are navigating the post-secondary school transition process for a young person with developmental disabilities.
The new booklet was created with and for family carers, co-led by researchers from the Scottish Learning Disabilities Observatory (SLDO) at the University of Glasgow and DIFFERAbled, a neurodivergence charity whose aim is to create an affirming and inclusive society for all neurotypes. SLDO researchers Dr Maria Truesdale and Dr Kirsty Dunn worked with staff, parents and carers from DIFFERabled to put together this information on the transition from secondary school to life beyond. It includes advice from the learned experience of parents and carers of neurodivergent young people and young people with developmental disabilities, as well as a description of services that parents can access for advice and support during this process.
This booklet aims to bridge a current gap in information for parents, carers and young people.
On 20th June, the co-creators of the new booklet will talk about why this resource is greatly needed, as there is currently no right to a transition plan for Scottish disabled young people as they leave school and move into adult life, and about the process of developing the booklet, drawing on the learned experiences of parents and carers of young people with developmental disabilities.
Tea, coffee and refreshments will be provided.
