On Tuesday 17th June 2025, 09.30-12.30, the Scottish Learning Disabilities Observatory will be hosting a workshop on pain care for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. We are delighted to welcome leading international specialists to talk about their work in this area, including:
Dr Chantel Burkitt - Senior Clinical Scientist at Gillette
Children’s Hospital, Minnesota, USA. Chantel will be presenting on:
Practical approaches for pain assessment.
Dr Brian Maguire, University of Galway. Brian will be presenting
on:
Accessible psychotherapy for individuals with intellectual and developmental
disabilities
Dr Tim Oberlander - Developmental Paediatrician and
pain physician at BC Children's Hospital (BCCH) in Vancouver, Canada.
Tim will be presenting on:
Medical management of pain in children and young people with intellectual
and developmental disabilities
Christine Pacitti, PhD candidate, University of Glasgow. Christine
will be presenting on:
Inequalities in pain related medication use in adults with learning disability
Professor Frank Symons, Distinguished McKnight University
Professor in the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of
Minnesota. Frank will be presenting on:
History and Advances in pain and intellectual and developmental
disabilities.
There will also be a panel discussion moderated by Professor Andrew Jahoda – Professor of Learning Disabilities in the School of Health and Wellbeing at the University of Glasgow, and Dr David Moore - (Associate Professor) in Pain Psychology at Liverpool John Moores University.
