What you need to know

Wednesday 16th October from 2 pm - 4 pm

Please join us for this month’s opportunity to visit the Hunterian Anatomy Museum at the University of Glasgow and learn more about the anatomical collections and their use both past and present.

Although most of the anatomical preparations housed in the museum were prepared by the Scottish anatomist and obstetrician William Hunter (1718–1783) there were also contributions in later years by several other anatomists of preparations and artefacts that have become part of the collections. From Regius Professor John Cleland’s late 19th and early 20th century collections (which include casts of the skulls of Robert Burns and King Robert the Bruce, internal organs of extinct marsupials, lost microscopy slides, and a pug dog) to the additions made by eminent all-round surgeon William MacEwen to the former Pathology Museum of the Glasgow Royal Infirmary, and from engraving plates for scientific illustrations to teaching charts featuring contemporary moustache fashions, there is much of interest in the historical teaching collection housed within the University of Glasgow’s Anatomy Facility.

Join us for the start of a series of talks about “everything else” in the Anatomy Museum and take the opportunity to ask questions followed by the opportunity to explore the museum. The first talk will be given by Mike G. Rutherford, Curator of Zoology and Anatomy at The Hunterian, who will share his research on John Cleland’s collection of skulls and its catalogue and talk about past and ongoing repatriation projects involving this collection.

Doors open at the time advertised, talk starts half an hour later, with time for questions & exploring the museum afterwards.

What to expect:

The Anatomy Museum is in the Thomson Building, within the Anatomy Facility at the University’s School of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing. For this event, the student entrance will be open to visitors, and there will be signs to direct you. Please note that for both legal and ethical reasons, no photography is allowed in the Museum and Facility.

The museum consists of one large room with a ground floor and upper gallery; while the ground floor is fully accessible and accessible toilet facilities are available, the gallery can unfortunately only be reached by staircase.

We are currently working on improving and expanding the object interpretation and labelling across the Museum, including the accessibility of the provided information. As the museum is and was an active teaching museum aimed at anatomy and medical students rather than wider audiences, the object descriptions and explanatory text available may be limited, especially of the anatomical preparations upstairs, and information is currently not available in multiple formats – but please do ask a member of staff if you have any questions, feedback forms will be available at the end of your visit.

Please take into consideration that the collections include human and animal remains which may be upsetting to some due to their nature and/or historical context; particularly sensitive examples are preparations showing developmental and reproductive anatomy, and there is a strong colonial context evident in the nature of the remains and their origin (particularly in the Cleland collection). Maps illustrating the museum layout are available, and staff will be present to advise you on how to plan your pathway across the museum. If you have any concerns – please speak to us.

**Please note that for those under 16 years old, an accompanying adult needs to be present due to the sensitivity of some of the specimens.**

**Photography is NOT permitted at this event**

**5 max ticket per person**
