What you need to know

TALE is a one-day teaching and learning event for University of Glasgow GP tutors and educational supervisors

#gptale2026

Teaching in general practice continues to be a very well evaluated and enjoyable aspect of the University of Glasgow medical curriculum. We are committed to both supporting and training our tutors and would like to extend an invitation to our annual Teaching and Learning Event (TALE) to all of our general practice tutors and educational supervisors. TALE will not only celebrate what is good about general practice teaching but will also focus on updating supervisors and tutors on developments in the curriculum.

This year, the TALE planning team have devised a fantastic programme which includes a wide range of lightning talks & short presentations in the morning for all delegates and a selection of interactive workshops that you can chose from in the afternoon designed to offer learning opportunities for new and experienced tutors.

Parallel workshops 1 (1.30-2.30pm):

Dr Lynsay Crawford & Haroon Ahmed (Year 1 Vocational Studies): Workshop for all Year 1 VS tutors to review the previous year, learn about changes for 26-27, and a Q&A sessions with the VS team.

Dr Lynsey Yeoman & Chris Tervit (Year 2 Vocational Studies Workshop): Workshop for all Year 2 VS tutors to review the previous year and learn about changes for 2026-2027.

Dr John Gibson (Suicide: how could I possibly save a life?): This interactive workshop offers a personal story of the devastating impact of suicide on family, friends and colleagues and asks how we might do better in preventing suicide at home, in education, at work and in our communities.

Dr Anna Matthews & Dr Aliki Traianou & Dr Katie Brown (Year 3 GP Tutor Development workshop): This session is for all Year 3 practice-based tutors and will provide an overview of teaching opportunities across the Year 3 curriculum, including the Clinical Practice Course (CPC) module (September–December) and the Systems in Medicine module (January–June). We will explore the practice-based teaching opportunities within each module, discuss student learning outcomes, and review assessment processes and expectations. The workshop will cover key updates relevant to both modules, including:

·         A review of the teaching programme and student feedback from last year's Year 3 placements.

·         Updates on parallel Year 3 teaching activities and clinical skills teaching.

·         Information on the Longitudinal Patient (LP) assessment, with a focus on how tutors can support students throughout the process.

·         Discussion of oral presentation topics for the coming academic year.

·         Review of daily placement timetables and structures, with opportunities to share practical teaching approaches, tips, and ideas for running effective teaching days in practice.

Dr Jilly Hamilton and Dr Alistair McLennan (Update on Year 4 Senior GP Clinical placements): Update about the new Year 4 Senior GP Placement and potential issues with Year 4 and Year 5 Senior placements occurring at the same time for this academic year.

Dr Kath Jones (Learning That Changes Practice: Rhythm for Whole-Person Care): This workshop explores learning not as the transfer of knowledge, but as a cyclical process of transformation. Using the rhythm of noticing, making sense, reimagining and integrating, participants will reflect on the patterns that shape how we learn, practice and recover. We will consider the beliefs, assumptions, habits and conditions that support or hinder learning — both for health professionals and for patients. Rather than asking how we can simply deliver more information, the workshop asks how we create the conditions in which people can become curious, make sense of their experience, reimagine what might be possible, and integrate change one small step at a time. Participants will apply this rhythm to their own educational, clinical or supervisory practice and leave with one practical change they can test in everyday work.

Parallel workshops 2 (3.00-4.00pm):

Dr Noy Basu & Dr Katie Brown (Realistic Sustainable Medicine - Juggling Hats for Excellence in Everyday General Practice): Life in GP land is like a game of cards, we learn to become adept at juggling our many hats and roles! Join us for a playful, collaborative and interactive small-group workshop. We will use the ‘Six Thinking Hats’ and ‘Double Diamond’ methods to explore the challenges and opportunities to embed learning around sustainable healthcare and realistic medicine into GP education. Together, we can develop ideas and actions to influence the curriculum – and to prepare learners to support patients and teams alike, and promote excellence in everyday general practice.

Dr Haroon Ahmed (Year 3 Communication Skills Workshop): Workshop for existing Year 3 Communication Skills tutors. Year 3 Communication Skills Tutor Update.

Dr John Gibson (Suicide: how could I possibly save a life?): This interactive workshop offers a personal story of the devastating impact of suicide on family, friends and colleagues and asks how we might do better in preventing suicide at home, in education, at work and in our communities.

Dr Karen Pope & Dr Alisha Aman (Prompt Care: Practical AI Skills for GP Educators): A hands-on workshop exploring prompting techniques and real-world applications for GP educators. We will explore the group’s experience of AI usage, outline important points regarding use of this in professional context, and get some hands-on practice using prompt frameworks to optimise outputs. Attendees are asked to bring their own devices on which they can access M365 copilotYou will practice using and take away a memorable framework for enhancing use of GenAI, and have the chance to start building your own prompt library.

Professor Lynsay Crawford and Dr Ula Chetty (COMET, GP SSC, and GP Electives workshop): This session will provide an update on the COMET programme, GP based SSCs as well as a student essay calibration exercise.
