What you need to know

The 20th of November to 20th December is Disability History Month.

The Centre for Disability Research and the Equality and Diversity Unit at the University of Glasgow are holding a film screening as part of Disability History Month.  We will be showing the 2024 Norwegian documentary film, ‘The Remarkable Life of Ibelin’ directed by Benjamin Ree, followed by a critical discussion.

The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival where it won 2 awards and went on to win a Peabody Award.  It tells the story of Mats Steen, a Norwegian man with muscular dystrophy who died aged 25.  His parents believed he led an isolated life, but after his death they discover he had a vibrant online community through World of Warcraft where his avatar was Ibelin Redmoore.  The film uses World of Warcraft style animation and home videos to show how he formed deep, meaningful relationships with fellow gamers, revealing that his digital life was real and impactful.

Afterwards Drs Nicola Burns and Phillippa Wiseman will be critically discussing the film.

We welcome everyone to attend the event!

Due to the restrictions of the screening licence, it is not possible to offer a virtual attendance option.
