From doctoral study to professorship, academic careers are rarely linear. This intergenerational conversation explores the evolving threads that shape ESEA scholars’ journeys: heritage and migration, identity and belonging, mentorship and mutual aid, barriers and breakthroughs. Together, the panel will consider how we can honour what we inherit, challenge what constrains us, and weave more equitable futures in higher education.

They will share their insights and experiences, exploring the barriers, breakthroughs, achievements, and everything in between. From visibility and representation to leadership and belonging, this is a space for open dialogue and genuine reflection.

The panel will be chaired by Professor Cindy Chew. 

Cindy Chew is a Consultant Radiologist, Honorary Professor and Director of Imaging and Anatomy at the University of Glasgow. She is Immediate Past President of the Scottish Radiological Society and President-Elect of the Radiology Section of the Royal Society of Medicine.

She is a Fellow of the European Society of Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Radiology and her national work spans radiology workforce planning, postgraduate and undergraduate education, clinical standards and health policy. She serves on Scotland’s Diagnostic Specialty Training Board and has held national roles with the Royal College of Radiologists and NICE. She has a particular interest in developing sustainable diagnostic capacity through workforce development, education, quality improvement and better use of existing NHS infrastructure.

Panellists

Dr Kevin Leomo (he/him) is a Scottish-Filipino sound artist, researcher, curator, and activist. He is the Co-Director of Creatives of Colour. Kevin sits on the Strategic Advisory Board for the Anti-Racism Observatory for Scotland and the Black Workers’ Committee for the Scottish Trades Union Congress. He leads the sound art collective Sound Thought, is a board member for the Scottish Music Centre, and is on the Musicians’ Union Regional Committee for Scotland & Northern Ireland. Kevin works as the Knowledge Exchange and Public Engagement Specialist for the College of Arts & Humanities at the University of Glasgow.

 

Yidan Hu is currently a PhD candidate in theatre studies at the University of Glasgow. Her research interests include theatre history, theatre translation, and cross-border theatre. She holds a MA in translation studies and has provided translation services for IOHA (The Institute of Human Anatomy) and IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare). In parallel with her academic research, she is also an active practitioner and organiser in the field of intercultural performance. As a founding member and current organiser of the UofG Peking Opera Society, she has curated exhibitions at the university’s Advanced Research Centre and directed public performances at Websters Theatre in Glasgow, aiming to foster critical dialogue between Chinese operatic forms and contemporary global audiences.
