What you need to know

A Day with Clay at the Heritage Visitor Centre

Tuesday 6th August

AT THE MOORCROFT HERITAGE VISITOR CENTRE, SANDBACH ROAD, BURSLEM, ST6 2DQ

Something happens when you work with clay. Moving your hands all the time - kneading, pinching, splatting, balling it up and starting again - your mind shifts into a different gear. It drifts lazily from one idea to the next, then loops back to the clay again, bringing you back into the moment. Do it with friends, and you find that conversation is the same: sporadic laughter as each of you battles with our 'Jolly' machine and yes, you will even add to your vocabulary on this exciting day!

This meditative quality is the basis for a happy clay day – a gathering of friends or strangers as we journey together through the medium of clay in one of England's oldest art potteries.

Enjoy a guided tour of our casting department where you will be shown how a Moorcroft mould is filled with liquid slip and later emptied. See how a clay shape is hand turned and sponged before having the Moorcroft impressed marks added to the base and try for yourself the awesome 'JOLLY MACHINE.'

During your day with clay, you will:

* Try your hand at filling a mould yourself with liquid slip.

* Emptying another mould to reveal the clay shape within.

* Sponging a clay shape in preparation for decoration.

* Create your very own 780/4 shaped coaster using our jolly machine. Your coaster will be fired and sent to you after the event.

As an added treat you will be given the option to choose from set designs which can also be added to your coaster by Moorcroft's craftspeople before being sent to you.

Three time slots are available for our ‘day with clay’ experience.  These are:

9am – 10.30am

10.45am – 12.15pm

12.45pm – 2.15pm

If you have a preferred time slot, please indicate this in the ‘comments’ section when ordering your tickets online.

The Moorcroft decorating room will also be open from 9am – 2.30pm.  Here you can meet a Moorcroft painter and tubeliner, and see a selection of designs which are available to be added to your finished coaster.

Places are limited.
