Igniting a Reading Culture in KS3

Throughout the programme, participants will explore Reading for Pleasure pedagogy (also known as reading volition), adolescent literacy research and leadership strategies to develop and sustain a strong reading culture across their secondary school. Participants will attend five sessions and complete gap tasks between sessions. Those who commit will be expected to attend all sessions. Programme Aims:

  • Understand the research underpinning adolescent reading engagement and Reading Volition; 
  • Broaden knowledge of contemporary and diverse Young Adult literature;
  • Develop strategies to promote independent reading across Key Stages 3 and 4;
  • Build a whole-school reading culture that supports disciplinary literacy and student engagement;
  • Develop leadership approaches to implement and sustain literacy improvement;
  • Share best practice and collaborate with other secondary schools.

Tuesday 12th January 2027 / 9am - 11.30am Session 4 – Motivating Reluctant and Disengaged Readers
Thursday 25th February 2027 / 9am - 11.30am Session 5 – Evaluating Impact and Sustaining a Reading Culture
Thursday 15th April 2027 / 9am - 11.30am
