Aimed at Early Years Leaders & Early Years Teachers
Ensuring children reach the early learning goals in literacy is becoming increasingly difficult. Over these three training sessions, Sarah will explore ways to excite children about reading and writing and explore effective and engaging ways for you to teach literacy skills. Throughout this training, you will have the opportunity to talk to colleagues and to evaluate your curriculum, environment and teaching to support literacy in early years.Venue:

Session 1: Developing Early Language & Vocabulary Skills
Date: Tuesday 11th November 2025
Time: 9am - 3pm
• Is talk developed enough to lead to oral literacy and composition?
• How do you assess starting points?
• What is the role of the adult in the development of early language?
• How do you assess progress in early language and vocabulary development?
• What practical strategies can we start to use right now?
Session 2: Developing Early Reading Skills
Date: Tuesday 13th January 2026
Time: 9am - 3pm
What is emergent reading, and why is this important?
• How do we promote the technical aspects alongside the love of reading?
• How do we get parents on board?
• How is reading promoted across the provision and how do we engage and motivate children to access early reading skills?
Session 3: Developing Early Writing Skills
Date: Thursday 5th March 2026
Time: 9am - 3pm
Is your provision exciting enough to motivate and engage young learners?
• How are you developing composition skills, so children are keen to write?
• How do you use transcription, so children know what success looks like?
• What is the place of dictation in early years?
• How is early writing taught and assessed?
