Reflective Reading Club: Disability History Month
Thursday 5th December. 13:00-14:00 [Online]
Disability History Month (16 Nov – 16 Dec) is a chance for us to talk about disability history, to celebrate the changes we have made in the UK to be more inclusive of people with disabilities and to talk about what more we can do (and then do it).
For our library reflective reading club this month we have selected a short article considering ableism (discrimination in favour of able-bodied people) in health care as well as an optional podcast.
The session is open to anyone at the Trust and we welcome attendance and reflections from all KCH staff (plus the club will earn any nurses and midwives who attend a valuable 1.5 hours of credited CPD time that they can use towards the 35 hours of CPD that they need to acquire for NMC revalidation).
Article: Janz H. L. (2019). Ableism: the undiagnosed malady afflicting medicine. CMAJ : Canadian Medical Association journal = journal de l'Association medicale canadienne, 191(17), E478–E479. https://doi.org/10.1503/cmaj.180903 https://www.cmaj.ca/content/191/17/E478
Additional optional listening: INCLUDED: The Disability Equity Podcast – 17: Healthcare and Disparities. https://music.amazon.co.uk/podcasts/86e9cceb-c211-4fcd-b637-be5c4a7f2236/episodes/dd46a42d-5925-4a02-9e28-9c770b0c3925/included-the-disability-equity-podcast-17-healthcare-and-disparities [no log-in required].
If you are limited on time we suggest you focus on the 10 minute slot starting at 15:12 and finishing at 25:10. A transcript is attached with the content for those 10 minutes highlighted.
