Summit MTB Club Go-Ride

Summit MTB Club Coaching Session

This is a private group coaching session delivered in line with British Cycling coaching standards. The session will take place at Lotts Wood, near Amersham, and is open to eligible club members.

This is a 2–3 hour mountain bike (MTB) skills coaching session, led by Jim Donald (qualified British Cycling Coach). The session will focus on developing 2–3 key skills, including body positioning, cornering, descending, and navigating natural trail features typical of the Chilterns.

This session is not aimed at advanced riders but is designed to build confidence and core off-road riding skills.

Session Details

  • Arrival: 09:40 (registration, equipment, and safety checks)
  • Start Time: 10:00
  • Finish Time: Between 12:30 and 13:00

Participants are expected to attend the full session unless otherwise agreed with the coach.

Booking, Fees & Attendance

  • Places must be booked in advance.
  • If you are unable to attend, please notify us as soon as possible so your place can be offered to another rider.
  • A £15 fee applies to non-Summit members, contributing towards venue hire and maintenance costs.
  • Refunds are not guaranteed and remain at the Club’s discretion.

Eligibility

  • Riders must be current members of either Summit MTB Club or Phoenix Gravel and Trail Cycling Club (individual or family membership).
  • New or prospective riders may attend one trial session before joining one of the clubs.

Equipment & Rider Responsibility

Participants (or their parent/guardian if under 18) are responsible for ensuring:

  • A safe, well-maintained mountain bike suitable for off-road use
  • A helmet meeting current UK safety standards (mandatory)
  • Appropriate clothing with no loose items that could become entangled
  • Gloves and knee pads (required) due to flinty terrain
    • Basic pads (e.g. skateboard pads) are acceptable
    • Limited spare pads may be available to borrow

All equipment must be checked prior to arrival.

Safety, Conduct & Environment

  • Riders must follow all coach instructions at all times.
  • Sessions take place primarily in a traffic-free environment.
  • Limited transitions between areas may require short use of shared/public access routes under supervision.
  • Riders must behave responsibly and not endanger themselves or others.
  • The coach reserves the right to exclude any participant for unsafe or disruptive behaviour.

Young Riders (Under 18)

  • Riders under 12 will only participate in traffic-free environments.
  • Riders under 18 will remain under supervision throughout.
  • Parents/guardians must:
    • Provide emergency contact details
    • Inform the coach of early collection or alternative arrangements

Public Highway Use

Where short sections of public access or roads are required, riders should be competent and confident. Recommended:

  • Previous safe riding demonstration
  • Road riding experience or
  • Bikeability Level 2 (or equivalent)

Health, Risk & Liability

  • Mountain biking is an inherently risky activity, and all participants take part at their own risk.
  • Any relevant medical information must be declared at the time of booking.
  • Summit MTB Club and its coaches are not liable for injury or loss except where caused by negligence.
  • Parents/guardians accept responsibility for riders under 18.

Data Protection & Privacy

Personal information is collected solely for the safe delivery of coaching sessions and is processed in accordance with the UK GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018.

We use your data for:
  • Session booking and administration
  • Communication with members
  • Coaching delivery (including emergency contacts and medical information)
Data sharing: Data handling:
  • Session data is held temporarily and securely destroyed after use
  • Membership data is stored via British Cycling systems
  • Communications may be sent via Mailchimp or closed club channels

Coaching Standards

All sessions are delivered by coaches who are:

  • British Cycling or MIAS qualified (or working towards qualification)
  • First Aid trained
  • DBS checked

Location & Parking

Parking is available at Lotts Wood.
Please do not obstruct the gate.
